Research Interests: My three main areas of research interest are (1) measuring success, (2) consultant engagement, and (3) enterprise systems. My interest in the often misconstrued character of "success" commenced with my Ph.D. (1991) wherein I analysed the success of 150 computer system selection projects involving external consultants. That work attuned me to the excessive emphasis on dollars and the subjectivity in selecting a subset of effectiveness measures (Gable 1996); it also cemented my belief in the importance of identifying all key stakeholders and triangulating multiple perspectives. In the mid-90s in collaboration with SAP, I initiated a program of research into enterprise systems (ES/ERP), exploring ES issues and impacts and knowledge management for ES success, spawning from the late-90s more focused attention on the measurement of enterprise systems success (ESS). This work attracted the interest of Accenture, our industry collaborator since on multiple ARC grants, the most recent of which is titled "Benchmarking IS-Impact in Organisations" (IS-Impact) and which generalizes work-to-date on ESS to complex, contemporary information systems (IS-Impact) more broadly.
